Co-Creating More Purpose and Joy

10 Simple Ways to Enhance your Emotional Intelligence

1. Get in touch with your emotions

Learn to recognize and describe your emotions accurately. By increasing your emotional vocabulary and using it to describe your full range of feelings, you can figure out how to pay more attention to your emotions. Find a quiet place and time to express your feelings in a feelings journal.

2. Seek feedback

Ask for feedback about your behavior from ten persons who matter to you the most. See if there is any aspect of your behavior you would like to reflect upon and change.

3. Get to know the triggers

Pay close attention to the things, people and situations that influence your emotional state.  Once you know what triggers your negative and positive emotions you can easily manage them too.

4. Clearly express yourself

Clearly express your ideas, thoughts and feelings. Be open and specific about what you have to say. This also implies that you respect the feelings of others while communicating.

5. Develop a Positive Perspective

If you cut away the clutter, every situation has a positive and negative side. Learn how you can look at the positive side of every situation and use it to your advantage.

6. Develop empathy

Listen to the verbal and non verbal cues while talking to others. Step into their shoes and tune into the language to access their map of reality. Reflect their feelings and emotions and check with them if they really feel as you perceive.

7. Learn to manage your relations

Be flexible in your style and approach to understand others needs and feelings. Don’t advise, command, control, criticize, blame or judge others. Look at the positive and bright side of people and see how you can establish rapport.

8. Resolve conflicts

Handle difficult people and tense situations with diplomacy and tact. Spot potential conflicts, bring disagreement into the open and help de-escalate them. Encourage debate and open discussions to achieve win-win solutions.

9. Be a motivator

Appreciate others often, give positive feedback, support others, recognize individual uniqueness, encourage and energize others, use humour wisely and become a natural motivator.

10. Forgive others

Forgiveness is another form of empathy and a way to let go of the negative emotions you’ve been harbouring that are holding you back emotionally. Forgiving others will help you to move on in your life with more peace and serenity. It is more important for us to have a bigger heart and to learn to forgive others.
