It is a story of a young man who wanted a job at Macy's department store. He presented himself to the personnel director who was cordial, but was told that no jobs were going to be available. Persistent, the young man refused to take no for an answer. He spent the next couple of hours browsing through the store making a list of problems with recommendations for improvement. He phoned the personnel director who had turned him down before and said “I want to work for Macy’s. I have spent the past two hours in the store, and I have found at least ten places where I could make a significant contribution. May I come up and tell you where they are?” The young man was invited up for another visit, and he got his job at Macy’s.
